LAST OF THE OLD / FIRST OF THE NEW

TWO RECENT WOODCUTS IN PROGRESS:

The last of 2011 and the first 0f 2012!

A week or so ago I was cleaning out the background on the “ASPARAGUS” woodcut with a mallet and large chisel. Hearing the tapping, my nephew came running excitedly asking: “Where’s the camera? We’re missing a photo opportunity!!” In any case the photo was taken, hence the finished carving waiting to be printed! 🙂

On the right, is the first piece of the New Year. The beginnings of a new carving. The drawing was made on the block with India Ink and a brush. The block was then stained a rust color. This will allow the cuts being made to be clearly visible.

More to come as the work progresses!

Will the rust colored stain used to make the cuts more visible have any impact on the final print color?

    • Andrij Maday says:

No, the rust areas will not have any direct impact on the print color. The stain serves purely as a carving aid, allowing one to see the carving results immediately and clearly.

All of the “rust stained” areas will be carved away.

When the block is printed , the raised “black” areas will be printed – the rust areas having been removed, will show up “white”!

Even though the traditional norm is black, the finished block can be printed in any desired color.
