THE WHALES’ TALE CONTINUES…………

Sunday morning, a week back, Zack called excited: ” My Mom says that you want to take me fishing!” “YES, IT”S TRUE” I said.

A barrage of questions followed: Do you think that we can go to the pier that was closed last time  –  you know, my favorite place! Sure. Do you have a fishing license? No, I don’t….  Oh! – followed by a pause of disapointment….

Well, I suppose that you can stand holding the rod Zack and I will stand behind you holding on to the back of your pants – to the belt, so you don’t fall in. That way, we will be connected and technically will both be fishing!

That will work!!! Laughter!!! See you soon! See ya!!

There we were driving – nearing our destination and Zack popped the magic question: “Would you want to go collect driftwood first? The fish will be biting better a little later!”.  I let out a squeal of delight – not a very manly one I have to admit. Fortunately it was barely audible, so I saved face. You see, while I was waiting for him to come over, I had prepared a special canvas bag with a rigged up shoulder strap. I was  hoping to get some driftwood for a frame making idea that I was nursing in my head for the last few weeks. So, of we went –  first to Huntingdon Beach!

After gathering up a respectable amount of driftwood trophies we raced each other up the tall cement stairs to street level and set out over to Rocky River.

There it was:

THE SPOT!

Can I get some minnows? Where? Over there –  pointing at the “Bratwurst and Bait Hut”. Which is which? Maybe I should get a Bratwurst instead, eat half and put the rest on my hook! Laughter…

Having been given our bucket with the dozen minnows (which actually contained 22 – someone was either very generous or lost count) we walked over to the pier. As wild as Lake Erie was on our last outing, that’s how calm and quiet it was now. Strangely quiet.

The first fisherman we saw had an 8 incher dangling  from his line.

They are biting today!!

Come on!!

A short distance further we spotted a man running quickly with a tape measure in his hand. As he fell to his knees we noticed that he was rushing to measure a Sheepshead which was lying on the pier.  27″ inches his fellow fishermen announced loudly!!

Hurry!

Hurry up!!!

Zachary set up in a flash! He and a few others began casting in the general vicinity where the Big One was caught! I stood next to him making sure that his second rod did not get yanked into the water. In all the frenzied excitement, I finally exclaimed: “Maybe you will catch his brother!”

I DON’T WANT HIS BROTHER!!!

I’M AFTER HIS MOTHER!!!!!

SHE MUST BE REALLY HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

–  Zack replied excitedly!

Different spots were tried and a number of the minnows gave their lives in order to bring a young man’s dream closer to reality. Eventually we had to call it quits since it was time to go home for dinner!

Having given the rest of the bait to the man who caught the big one we left – I with my catch of driftwood and Zack still dreaming, this time of  the REALLY HUGE ONE – THE MOTHER!

“No WOW moments today” he said in the car.

Oh, I don’t know about that…… Depends on how you look at it……….

🙂
