PAFA FELLOWSHIP ANNUAL

A couple of weeks ago, while preparing for CVC Art Camp, I received notification that my painting “REFLECTIONS” was chosen for inclusion in FAME 2017! ~~~ “REFLECTIONS” Acrylic on canvas 36 x 36″ ~~~ FAME is the Fellowship Annual Exhibit at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia PA.   ~~~ The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, founded in 1805, is America’s first and oldest art school and museum. An amazing place, filled with amazing faculty and equally amazing students. I was very fortunate to have been a student at PAFA for...

CVC ART CAMP

Every year, Cuyahoga Valley Church AKA CVC, a large nondenominational christian church in Broadview Heights, Ohio, offers a week long summer SPORTS CAMP for kids. Within it’s framework, among other categories, is also an Art Camp. Over 1250 children attended camp! (That’s one thousand two hundred fifty!) and the entire thing is FREE! * Yes, you read that correctly. It’s all FREE! Plus, everything is run by volunteers! Hundreds of them! The whole thing is masterfully run by Denise, an energizer bunny, who never seems to run out of steam! (Or at least never shows it!) The...

A NEW DORMITION ICON

This project, like many of the rest, began with a surprise phone call. The surprise commissions are always fun to get. You sit quietly painting, minding your own business and viola! That’s how it was with this one. * And so, work began: The drawing layed out on the panel. ~~~ Gold leafing in progress. ~~~ Gilding completed. Beginnings of underpainting…. ~~~ Underpainting finished. ~~~ Painting begun. ~~~ Robes in the works. ~~~ The next step….. ~~~ Robes completed. ~~~ The gilding of robes and ornaments. ~~~ Faces in the works…. ~~~ A closeup…. ~~~ The end! ~~~...

MLENKA: TRIPTYCH

A while back, when writing the post about the completed drawing of “MAKAI”, I jokingly ended by saying: “Bring on the dogs”! Lo and behold, not to long after, another commission popped up in my email! I like your “Deer Triptych” drawing that I saw on your website the writer said, could you do one of my Mlenka? Well, you do know, that each panel of the Deer Triptych is 3 x 6 feet I wrote back. Oh, okay, maybe not THAT big… but something a bit more size appropriate for our home was the response. So, what’s a Mlenka I asked?? It’s a Pumi! A...

LITTLE ONES IN PHILADELPHIA

BOY TIME FLIES! It seems that it was just June! And now, it’s already July! So, time to quickly play catch up once again… ~~~ In the beginning of June, I flew to Philadelphia to celebrate my mothers birthday and to visit family. I arrived to a household full of cheers and tears! It wasn’t long until this visit became all about “little ones”. Both humans and art. Let me explain. First the humans: During my visit, my sister had one or more of her grandchildren over daily. This was a blast! Little kids are fun! They are none stop excitement. Your hair is messy, let...

A LATIN BENEDICT GOES BI-COASTAL!

“One of these days”, you will have to do a Saint Benedict for me my client said a while ago. Since childhood he has been near and dear to my heart, he added. So, I would love an Icon of him. A large one! Written all in Latin! I was excited! Years ago, I had two opportunities to visit Saint Benedict’s Monastery in the cliffs of Subiaco in Italy. Once in my late teens and then again in my later twenties. I still remember making our way up the steep walk with my friend Hlib and first seeing the Monastery ahead of us in the cliffs. Well, “one of these days” came...

“MAKAI” in pencil

I handed over the credit card to pay for my chiropractic appointment. Every so often I have to make sure that my head is on straight you know. Having paid, as I fumbled with my card trying to put it away, the young lady behind the counter asked if I would do a portrait of her dog. In pencil! Achromatic, she quickly added! About this big, she gestured dramatically with her hands. I was caught of guard. The look on my face must have betrayed the circus in my head which immediately went into full swing. Visions of poodles began dancing around in my mind! Some sort of  fru fru dog probably, I...

SOME SMALL ONES…. Plus…..

Lately, I have been kept busy by a series of small commissions. These type of projects usually come in waves and are rather labor intensive, but non-the-less fun to do! Above are some of the pieces in various stages of completion and below are the finished ones proceded by a brief progress report on each. ~~~ “THEOTOKOS: LOVINGKINDNESS #2” Acrylic and 22k gold leaf on wood 8×10″ Private collection: Abington, Pennsylvania ~~~ “CHRIST: PANTOCRATOR” Acrylic and 22k gold leaf on wood 8×10″ Private collection: Abington, Pennsylvania ~~~ “ANGEL...

NEW PHILLY WATERCOLORS

NEW PHILLY WATERCOLORS aka “THE GREAT ESCAPE”  My customary mid-summer visit to Philadelphia had been delayed for various unforeseen reasons. Now it was already fall, so off I flew to visit Mother, Sister and her husband, as well as Nephews and their families. No reason to rent a car I was told, my brother-in-law would pick me up at the airport. After a number of weather related delays, I arrived to a damp drizzly fall Philadelphia day. We headed north trying to avoid the unavoidable – rush hour traffic in a major city! As a result of my brother-in-laws manouvers I got a...

CALIFORNIA MOSAICS!

Andrij! I need a couple of mosaics!! – said the voice on the phone. As usual, I was taken by surprise but not startled. Surprise projects are good. They keep us artists excited and on our toes!!! The commission was for two mosaics of Angels. The mosaics were to be installed in a stone wall surrounding a private estate. How cool! I got busy! Lot’s to do! First full size color images had to be designed and produced. Then these images had to be sent to Italy where skilled craftsmen, who have been doing this for generations, painstakingly translated these images into mosaics using...

PICNIC BY THE LAKE / NEW WATERCOLORS

Earlier this fall, a friend of ours proposed we “do something together”. My wife in her wisdom suggested a picnic. They both got excited about the idea. Yes, a picnic by the lake! THE LAKE!! Lake Erie!!! No small pond this! On the agreed upon day we prepared and met up in Lakewood Park. After nibbling a bit, the women got engaged in an animated conversation. I in turn sat across from them at the picnic table and worked on watercolors, throwing in the odd word…. It was a beautiful clear day. The lake did not disappoint. It was dramatic as ever. At the end of it all we...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING / NEW ICON

Good Morning all! Well, it seems that I have to play catchup once again. I got so caught up in painting and teaching that I unfortunately neglected the “New Artwork” blog posts! It has been a busy late summer / fall. I have been fortunate to work on a number of unique and interesting commissions and projects: Icons, Mosaics, Watercolors and Paintings.  Will be sharing them all with you shortly! But, first things first. Today is Thanksgiving Day! Thanks Giving Day… a day designated by President Abraham Lincoln for us to pause, rest and reflect on our lives. It seems that we...

THE NEXT GENERATION……

A number of years ago I was approached by a young Korean-American family with a request for Icons for their sons Solomon and Moses. Could you do the inscriptions on the Icons in Korean they asked. I laughed and said that my Korean is a bit rusty, but if they write it out for me it would not be a problem. In any case the grandparents wrote it out and the Icons were delivered to smiles! Life went on. The children grew. The family moved all over the world. A while back I got an unexpected email from the young mother, now a grandmother herself, asking if I would be willing to write Icons for...

FOR THE NEW BORNS……..

Have been keeping quite busy with projects this summer. Commissions always seem to come unexpectedly and in waves! Recently, I was approached with a couple of urgent requests. Both parties wanted Icons for children who were either just born, or about to be. So much for lead time!! In any case, the work was completed in a timely fashion and delivered. From what I understand, everyone is happy. Even the little ones! Here is a short blow by blow: Prepared drawing on the board…. ~~~ Guilding and base color complete. ~~~ Robes and boarders complete. ~~~ The first finished piece! ~~~...

SEEKING NEW…..

They say that being an artist is quite the balancing act! Keeping different projects, commissions, mediums and interests going and in harmony …… Non-the-less, every so often one has to do a realignment, a tuneup of sorts, to balance things out.  ~~~ I must admit that I have been truly fortunate over the years to always have interesting projects under my hands. My work plate has never been empty! Artwork has always been a contemplative experience for me, regardless of the medium or subject. It is my meditation time if you will. It’s when I “listen”. (My wife...

THE WEDDING…..

We need an Icon of “THE WEDDING IN CANA” the client said. To match the other pieces you did for us! OH…. OK…. Work began!!! Feverish work! Well, and it continued, continued and continued. Sometimes things that seem exotic and easy are actually quite labor intensive! Usually more so than they appear…. Finally the project was completed, crated and shipped to it’s new home. It arrived Friday last. The client texted me that he is happy! That made me happy…. ~~~  Here are a few work shots and the finished piece:   In the beginning… was a...

GOOD FRIENDS….

A couple of summers ago a tragic boating accident occurred on Lake Michigan off the Chicago coast line! Four young professionals, at the prime of their lives, went out for a leisurely afternoon cruise on a boat which unfortunately sank.  In the end, three of the four perished. One young man was rescued the next day…… … A while back, I was unexpectedly approached by a group of women with a request. They were friends of the mother of one of the young boaters. They were her support team! Her posse!! The women informed me that they all chipped in and that it was their desire to...

WINE CELLAR PROJECT

The call came unexpectedly! I was painting, minding my own business… We need a piece for the new wine cellar we are building the client said. I’ll send you a template of the space so you can get started! I have to admit that I really like surprises, especially surprise projects. They usually tend to be unique and a bit challenging. This one was no exception. The template arrived and work began… In time the piece was completed and shipped. AND, the client is happy! *** Here is a sort of step by step: Panel Prep…. cloth glued on the panel. ~~~ Final coat of gesso. ~~~...

TWO NEW GICLEES!

So, I have been asked of late: “Why so quiet? Nothing new?” Quiet yes. Idle NO!   After the Holidays I just withdrew to focus on current commissions. That, plus teaching a couple of courses, has made the time really fly by. I have a number of new pieces to share with you, and I suppose that it is high time to begin posting them. Today, in response to: “When are you going print Giclees of…………..” , we are offering two new limited edition Giclees.  They are printed with archival inks on acid free paper, numbered and signed. They are available...

IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The call came unexpectedly! How far along are you on the piece for me the client asked? I had been quietly working on his project at that very moment. Another one of those coincidences. I need it in time for the Holidays he said! When I paint I’m in my own world, oblivious to everything else… (My wife reminds me of this often!) It took me a minute. It’s like being awakened from a deep sleep. Oh! OK! Not a problem I replied. Just put a gun to my head, why don’t you… We both laughed. We spoke for a few more minutes and I returned to the task at hand, working at a...

SAINT PETER AND THE WAYWARD ANT!

There I was, working on the mural. I was quietly painting Saint Peters robe, minding my own business, when I noticed an ant racing along his shoulder. He was on a roll! The little guy was really moving!! How did you get here and what are you looking for I wondered….. ? The little fellow had speed. He was on steroids, running circles around my brush. The amazing thing was, he never ran into the brush nor the wet paint. Blew my mind he did! I watched him for a bit and eventually focused back on my work as he continued to race around. Eventually the ant ran off. Perhaps to look for...

EVOLUTION OF A MURAL

The project which kept me quite busy for most of the summer into the fall was a 19 foot wide mural commission for a church in Seattle, Washington. As with most of these type of commissions, various challenges arise.  One has to work with and around the space at hand, as well as various changes to the layout and design by the client etc. Once the composition entitled “Communion of the Apostles” was designed and laid out on paper to fit the particular space, work was ready to begin. ~~~ A WORK IN PROGRESS: The first step: The prepared  scale drawing / lay out on the drawing board....

GRATITUDE DAY

“IN GRATITUDE THE HEART SINGS” www.andrijmaday.com/2013/03/gratitude/ ~~~ It’s coming! Soon!! Thanksgiving Day is two days away!    What a noble idea, President Abraham Lincoln had in 1863, to set aside a common day for THANKSGIVING, for GRATITUDE!   A day to pause and reflect on our lives and surroundings, however humble they may be, and say wow, thank you! As a child this holiday was big in our family. Gratitude was big to begin with. My family arrived as refugees from a brutalized and war torn Europe with nothing, except a heart full of thanks. Thanks for a new...

HOLIDAY ORDERS!

*** Hello All! A quick note to request that you place your Holiday orders and purchases from our site as soon as possible in order to insure a timely delivery to your home or office. As you know, once we enter the month of December, both the Postal Service and UPS get really quite busy! This has a tendency to cause delivery delays….. It has been a privilege to serve you all year and we look forward to doing so in the future. Many thanks!...
